cast in a powerful striding stance, the right front leg stretched forward and the left hind leg extended, the thick paws slightly lifted off the ground exposing sharp claws, its head raised alertly and dominated by piercing eyes and furrowed brows, the ferocious horned beast portrayed with gaping jaws above a tuff of beard, the broad muscular body accentuated with elaborate scrollwork against a ground of swirls and hatching, flanked by feathery wings detailed with striations and terminating in a sinuous tail with feathery protrusions and tufts of fur, the back surmounted by a rectangular and a circular socket incised with concentric circles and triangles, the underside cast with male genitals

with shallow rounded sides curving down to a flat base supported on three gently flaring ruyi-shaped feet, bordered by a band of evenly spaced rounded studs between two raised ribs around the rim, and another band of studs above the feet, the well-proportioned body applied with a thick and opalescent glaze of an alluring purple-and-blue colouration, the interior with an even milky lavender-blue glaze with characteristic 'earthworm tracks' and accentuated with a wash of mottled purple, the rim and exterior with a vibrant purple glaze in tones of mauve, lavender and plum, thinning to a mushroom tone at the raised edges, the base covered with an olive-brown wash and inscribed with a numeral wu (five), surrounded by a neat ring of tiny spur marks revealing the pale buff stoneware body

the sturdily-potted baluster body rising from a spreading foot to a short straight neck with a lipped rim, superbly painted around the body in vibrant cobalt blue with four fishes swimming in a pond amidst large blooming lotus flowers and various aquatic plants, the lively scene detailed with two butterflies hovering above, the neck encircled with cresting waves painted with calligraphic precision, the rounded shoulder with large peony blooms borne on a continuous leafy scroll, with the blooms alternating in frontal and profile views, all above stylised upright petals enclosing various precious emblems and flaming pearls, the broad foot ring and recessed base unglazed

fluently painted in cobalt of an inky-blue tone, the central well brilliantly adorned with a single carp swimming amidst swirling eelgrass and other aquatic plants, enclosed within a broad band on the cavetto accentuated by eight peony blooms depicted in full-frontal and profile views, borne on a continuous foliate branch with leaves naturalistically detailed with veins, all outlined and set against a background of concentric rings resembling cresting waves, the everted barbed rim uniquely moulded with a continuous lingzhi scroll on a contrasting solid blue ground, the exterior decorated with a frieze enclosing a lotus scroll, the unglazed base burnt orange
