초현실주의 르네 마그리트 작품, 소더비 경매서 작가 최고가 경신
초현실주의 화가 르네 마그리트(1898~1967)의 걸작 ‘빛의 제국’이 작가의 경매 최고가를 경신했다.
2일(현지 시각) 영국 런던 소더비 경매에서 약 7980만달러(957억원)에 낙찰됐다. 지금껏 유럽에서 팔린 그림 중 둘째로 비싼 가격이다. 마그리트는 생전 ‘빛의 제국’이라는 제목으로 27점의 그림을 남겼는데, 이번에 낙찰된 작품이 규모 면에서 가장 큰 그림(114.5x146㎝)이다. 이날 저녁 3명의 응찰자가 그림을 둘러싼 열띤 경쟁을 벌였고, 결국 소더비 아시아 근현대미술 부문 대표를 통해 실시간 전화 응찰에 참여한 익명의 구매자가 그림을 가져갔다.
벨기에 출신 르네 마그리트는 무의식에 기반한 초현실주의(surrealism) 화풍을 대표하는 화가로, 현실에서는 볼 수 없는 엉뚱한 상황과 풍경을 화폭에 옮겨 충격을 안겼다. 1961년 완성된 이 ‘빛의 제국’은 쨍쨍한 대낮의 하늘과 어둠에 잠긴 주택가를 한 화면에 담아낸 그림이다. 빛과 어둠, 그리고 시간의 중첩이 특유의 온화한 색채와 함께 몽상을 야기한다. 생전의 마그리트는 “내 작품이 전하려는 것은 한 편의 시(詩)”라는 말을 남겼다.
이 그림은 마그리트가 후원자였던 미술 컬렉터 피에르 크로웨트의 딸 앤마리(83)를 위해 그린 그림이다. 앤마리는 마그리트의 작품에 자주 등장하는 모델이기도 했다. 앤마리는 지난달 영국 파이낸셜타임스 인터뷰에서 “마그리트가 날 위해 그림을 그려주겠다고 했고 나는 ‘그럼 제일 크게 그려 달라’고 요구했다”고 말했다. 이 작품은 경매 출품 전까지 앤마리의 가족이 소유했고, 2009년부터 2020년까지 벨기에 마그리트미술관에 걸려있었다.
